WMSLT ‘Hub’ Support Service

At WMSLT we recognise that many schools are setting up their own ‘hub’ settings in response to the ever-increasing number of children with early complex language and communication. We have a team of experienced, specialist staff that can support you to establish a hub or enhance an existing hub within your school. Our ‘hub’ support service is designed to enable your staff to build a thriving, autonomous, safe environment for your students.

How does the Hub Support Service work?

  • Our Hub support service supports the universal and targeted level of the graduated approach. The support is designed to provide your school with a successful, self-sufficient hub. Training is a big focus in this package. We will provide training to all members of staff working in the hub throughout the school year. The training will cover a number of topics including…

    • Assessing and devising outcomes for students with early complex communication needs

    • Specific training covering a core set of interventions

    • Bespoke enabling that will support your staff to offer a multisensory provision, tailored to the needs of individual children

Our team will work together with your hub staff in order to overcome any barriers, and to ensure that your hub is supportive of all students accessing the setting. We will help you set up or enhance the environment; employing good Autism practice, visual support and maximising opportunities for communication. We will enable your staff to implement quality, evidence-based interventions such as Attention Autism and Intensive Interaction. We take a total communication approach and can support your staff in using a variety of methods of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), all while using a neurodiversity affirming approach.

  • The multi-disciplinary team that will support your school consists of a Specialist (Senior Speech and Language Therapist and/or experienced SEN Teacher), a Speech and Language Therapy Assistant and an Occupational Therapist. Our team have experience in supporting Specialist settings as well as Resource Bases and mainstream hub environments.

Our Hub Support Service supports hubs within a mainstream setting. For further information on supporting a caseload in a special school, please visit our specialist settings page.
